Terms of use
For on-wildlife and on-site. Free apps, no accounts, no subscriptions. These are the terms you agree to by using them.
Safety, which matters more than the rest of this page
These apps are references, not safety equipment. Do not let a phone make a decision that your own judgement should make.
- Do not rely on them in an emergency. Neither app can call for help. Carry a way to reach emergency services where you are going, and tell someone your plan.
- Identification can be wrong. Never eat a plant, berry or mushroom because an app helped you name it. Many edible species have dangerous look-alikes. If you are not certain from your own knowledge, do not eat it.
- Wildlife information is general. Bear and wildlife guidance follows the province's published advice, but animals do not read guidance. Keep your distance.
- Fishing rules change. Seasons, limits and sizes in the app are a convenience copy. The current regulations published by the Government of Ontario are the rule. Check them before you fish.
- Maps and locations are approximate. Do not navigate by them. Carry a map and a compass, and know how to use them.
Your content is yours
What you write, rate and photograph in these apps belongs to you. It is stored on your device and never sent to me, so I acquire no rights to it and could not use it if I wanted to. See the privacy policy.
Sharing, and the optional community layer
on-wildlife includes an optional feature, off by default, for people who run their own server. Nothing is shared unless you enter a server address yourself and switch sharing on. If you use it, you agree not to post anything unlawful, abusive, hateful, harassing, deceptive, or that reveals another person's location or the precise location of a sensitive nest, den or at-risk species.
Where the app can display something posted by another person, it gives you a control to report and hide it. Reported items are hidden on your device immediately. Content you find objectionable can also be sent to katsuma123@gmail.com, and I will act on it. Where the server is one you run, you are the one who can remove content from it, and you are responsible for what it serves.
Acceptable use
Do not use these apps to break the law, to harass anyone, to harm wildlife or habitat, to poach, or to locate protected species in order to disturb them. Do not attempt to use the apps to attack, overload or misuse any of the third-party services they draw on.
No warranty
These apps are provided as they are, free of charge, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy or non-infringement. I do not promise the information is complete or current, that the apps will work without interruption, or that they are free of errors.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of these apps, including lost data, missed regulations, injury, or any decision you made with the app's help. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Data loss
Because everything is stored on your device and nothing is backed up to a server, your log can be lost if you delete the app, clear site data, lose the device, or a browser evicts storage. Export regularly. I cannot recover anything for you.
Other people's work
Map images come from CARTO, rendering OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors. Fishing zone boundaries and regulation summaries come from the Government of Ontario's public data. Reference photos, when enabled, come from iNaturalist under their contributors' licences and are credited where they appear. Their terms govern their material.
Not affiliated
These are independent apps. They are not made by, endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with Ontario Parks, the Government of Ontario, Parks Canada, iNaturalist, OpenStreetMap, CARTO or Apple. Park names, place names and programme names are used to describe the places and rules they refer to, and remain the property of their owners.
Changes and ending
These terms can change, and the date at the top changes with them. Continuing to use the apps after a change means you accept it. You can stop using them at any time by deleting them, which also deletes your data. These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario, Canada.
